I’ve been tracing some issues for the last three weeks or so. Started with a lack of power, hesitation and poor acceleration. Code reader indicated the the VVT solenoids we’re not operating properly, so I replaced both. That issue has now disappeared, but then I got a P0101 and P0010 codes. I have replaced the MAF sensor, and cleaned the Throttle body. While doing so I discovered the air filter housing screws were stripped and the unit was drawing unfiltered air in from around the air filter seal. I have repaired that, reset the computer and ran for 15 minutes at idle, then drove it around for another twenty minutes. Check engine light was off and no codes. Last Friday my wife started it up, the idle was rough and the check engine light came back on. I tried cleaning the MAF sensor again, but no improvement. I’m left scratching my head and wondering where I go from here. Suggestions?

Did you remove the throttle body to clean it? Double check for a loose connector shell at the components you serviced. Intake hose clamps too.
Those codes indicate a mass airflow range issue and a camshaft position actuator circuit issue. If you have a new maf sensor, i would be looking at the wiring harness and connectors very closely.
That P0010 code is a relatively rare one. I would be looking at the wires and connection for that one! I doubt that the actuator is toast.
Given that it is a 2012, i gotta ask if you have ever pulled out the battery and tray to do a clean up and anti corrosion treatment ( aka petroleum jelly) on the ground connection cluster in that area?

Do you know if there is a MAP sensor as well on this 2012 SES model? It is not a turbo.

I suppose that that might be an area to look into.

Can you tell me where to look for the MAP Sensor on the 2012 SES Intake manifold?

I replaced the air filter, re-cleaned the connections with the TBS and the MAF. Could not locate any MAP Sensor on the intake manifold and I really looked hard. Reset the ECM and cleared the codes with my OBD II reader. Tried it again and same rough idle. Got two new codes, the P0101 and a P0171. Backed off for the evening. I'm at a loss. P0171 said mixture way too lean on Bank (1 or A. I don't remember exactly). Any insights would be appreciated.

Something is not assembled right. That P0171 code usually signals an intake leak - poor vacuum - so since it was worknig ok until this showed up - the reassembly may be the whole problem; you just forgot to tighten or seat something.

The Intake manifold between a 2009 and 2012 FIESTA (the one in the USA - the intake Throttle body was in the "fold" of the manifold in earlier models.

Then about the time is was introduced (one last time for an 8 + year run) they modified the "fold" of the manifold to something like this...

The air intake was now on the transmission side - but then FORD was still working out bugs in regards to MAP/MAF so they "kept both" in several model years until they could make a program work that did away with the MAF and allowed the MAP and fuel trim to be calculated electronically.

So look for overlay of MAP between the years - but if you don't have one - remember they had two spots it could be in.
